- What‘s your reason for posting?
- Who are you trying to reach?
- Why should your audience care about your post?
- When are you planning to post?
- Where does your audience hang out online?
- How does your audience prefer to consume content?
If you understand the why, what, when, where, who and how of your social media approach, it’s a whole lot easier to make changes as you go, deal with algorithm updates and stay ahead of the game.
The importance of your social media profile
After strategy and planning, the next element that can help you nail your social media is your profile. To get the most out of social media, it’s best to have business profiles set up on both Facebook and Instagram. This allows you to access enhanced analytics so you can see:
- the best times to post
- who is following your account
- which posts perform best
- what content gets the most reach
- demographic, geographic and other audience information.
On Instagram, changing over to a business profile gives you the chance to create a call to action button, where followers can visit your website, contact you or learn more about a product or service. You can also create quick shortcuts to highlight your main stories and create topics for your content to make it easier for followers to find what they need.
While you may be focused on your business profile, your personal profile can also help raise awareness and build your brand. On Facebook, make sure your personal profile links back to your business page so when people hover over your name, they can click the link and find out more about your business and what you do.

We all know that Facebook and Instagram want you to pay to play. It’s been that way for a while now. Getting organic reach is tough and for some business owners, it seems boosting posts and paying for ads is the only way to get seen. However, organic marketing is NOT dead and you can still harness your social media channels to gain free reach.
Obviously, we’re big fans of organic marketing around here (it’s all we do!) so we know there are ways your small business can stand out and gain a following without having to fork out for ads. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Giveaways and contests are a great way to boost your reach and expand your following. A smart strategy is to ask existing followers to tag their friends to enter your competition. Just be aware of relevant rules for running contests.
- Asking questions is a good way to start conversations and increase engagement. You can use different types of content to do this, such as polls, gifs, images and video. Make sure you reply to all comments to keep the conversation going.
- Use hashtags to expand your reach beyond your follower circle. People use hashtags to discover new content on topics that interest them so ensure you add relevant and trending hashtags to your content to make it easier to find.
